Crossing Borders. Reportage from
Our Mekong (2006)

With articles and photo essays written by 17 journalists, the
book offers a peek at the varied ethnic communities that straddle
nation-states, China’s rising clout, and the risks that
abound at rough-and-tumble border areas. Readers will also take
in how more open borders facilitate trade and commerce and give
people such as Cambodians who seek better health services in
neighbouring countries- more options in life, but also make
it easier to smuggle cultural antiquities and drugs. Several
articles make comparisons between countries, looking into the
social involvement of Buddhist monks and the role of volunteer
groups in working toward more awareness of HIV and AIDS.
To get these stories, the journalists travelled aboard boats,
buses, motorcycles and planes- many were foreign correspondents
for the first time- on assignments that tested their resourcefulness
and determination in a region where the environments for media
work are quite varied. |
