IPS Gender and Develpment Glossary,
1996

The immediate goal of this glossary is to provide definitions
and context for key terms that have become closely associated
with gender and development analyses and global public debates
on the roles and contributions of women and men in development.
IPS, as a matter of explicit editorial policy, believes that
gender is central to understanding and reporting on development
processes and that quality reporting depends on including a
diversity of voices, which must include woman equally with men,
and gender perspectives in all news products.
The glossary cannot hope to take into account all possible meaning
and contexts of many of the terms. In such cases, a general
definition is provided that, along with contextual information
and examples, suggests the diversity and complexity of the concepts
across cultures. Accurate translation between English and Spanish
is a daily challenge in the agency, and cross-cultural differences
in gender perspectives present their own set of considerations.
The inclusion of contextual information as well as a Spanish
equivalent in parentheses for each term, where appropriate,
is a way of addressing these challenges. |
