Invisible Borders. Reportage from
Our Mekong (2003)

The Greater Mekong Subregion, comprising Cambodia, China (Yunnan
province), Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, is resource-rich
and culturally diverse. Covering over 2.3 million square kilometers,
it is home to 240 million people and more than 100 different
ethnic groups. The subregion is bound by common elements like
the Mekong river, all of 4,880 kilometres, which flows from
the Tibetan plateau, down to China’s Yunnan province and
on to the five other countries downstream, and out into the
South China Sea.
‘Invisible Borders: Reportage from Our Mekong’ is
a joint journey of discovery by the 16 writers and photojournalists
who crafted the work in this book, and Inter Press Service Asia-
Pacific, for which this was an opportunity to share its experience
and expertise in in-depth, contextualized reporting in the South.
It is our hope that the sharing of their unique experiences
will be an eye-opener to the complex and diverse realities in
the GMS, helping readers gain a news understanding of the impacts
of globalization and regionalism on the lives of the Greater
Mekong people, and their social systems, cultures and environment.
